Absorbent article (38) is made from a superabsorbent polymer material bound together by thermoplastic, both polymers being extruded in the presence of a blowing agent. Independent claims are included for: (a) hygienic articles, e.g. nappies, sanitary towels and incontinence pads, with a multilayer structure in which each layer consists of an article as described above; and (b) a method of making the article comprising adding at least 70 wt.% of granular superabsorbent polymer to a thermoplastic in an extruder; melting the thermoplastic at a temperature below the melting or decomposition point of the superabsorbent polymer; adding a blowing agent under pressure; and extruding so that the thermoplastic forms a foam matrix binding the granules together.
