The contact system has a movable contact bridge with pair of movable contacts and pair of fixed contact elements. The contact system is designed so that a holding shut facility (32) is located in the switch unit. This can be acted on by a magnet armature (28). This remains connected and held in position with the contact bridge, after being acted on, and is independent of any further condition change of the auxiliary magnet system (22) . The holding shut facility (32) is located at right angles to the movement direction of the contact bridge (2), and moves across the contact bridge (2).
