Apparatus to take samples from a drum (2) of a mill or mixer comprises a centrally arranged bore which reaches through a side wall (8); a fixed casing (4) which reaches through the bore; a tap (5) arranged on the outer side of the drum for opening and closing the feed through the casing; and a lance (6) having a recess (27) for receiving the sample. The lance can be guided through the tap and the casing into the drum. An Independent claim is also included for a process for taking samples from a drum of a mill or mixer. Preferred Features: The drum is positioned on axially arranged journals. The central bore and the casing extend through a side wall of the drum and a journal fixed to the wall.
