Fabrics, foils and films comprising a major proportion of hydrophobic polymeric material are rendered antistatic and their tendency to attract dirt and dust is reduced together in some cases with an improvement in their dyeing properties e.g. with cotton dyestuffs, by treating them in the presence of an alkali with (1) a sulphonium salt which in the presence of alkali liberates the following sulphonium cation in which R 1 and R 2 independently represent hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms and R 3 and R 4 independently represent the group (-CR 1 =CHR 2 -), or an alkyl, substituted alkyl (where the substituent is not an -SH or 7NH group and is substantially stable to alkali) or aralkyl radical and (2) and aqueous solution of a reactive polymeric substance having at least one reactive -OH, = NH or -SH group in each molecule, the increase in the dry weight of the treated material being 0.2-3%. Suitable sulphonium salts are # haloethyl salts such as (XCH 2 CH 2 ) 2 R 3 S<SP>+</SP>Y<SP>-</SP> and (XCH 2 CH 2 ) 3 S<SP>+</SP>Y<SP>-</SP> in which X is halogen and Y is an amino, e.g. tris (#-chloroethyl) sultris #-hydroxy ethyl sulphonium salts such as phonium chloride, and esters of mono, bis- and e.g. the disodium salt of tris (# sulphato ethyl). sulphonium inner salt. The polymeric substance may be starch or a starch ether, carboxymethyl or a hydroxyalkyl cellulose, sodium alginate, glue, gelatin or a condensation product of ethylene oxide and a polyamide forming substance. The alkali may be an alkali metal hydroxide, bicarbonate, or carbonate, ammonium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium sesquicarbonate or borax. The materials may be treated simultaneously or consecutively in any order with the alkali, sulphonium salt and polymeric material in any order from aqueous media and may subsequently be dried and heated at 60‹- 220‹C. for from 20 seconds to 5 minutes. The hydrophobic polymeric materials from which the treated articles are made may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyesters, polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile, cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose triacetate, or glass. Fabrics containing fibres made from synthetic hydrophobic polymeric materials in admixture with cotton fibres may be treated.</p>
