PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and appropriately change a vehicle for tracking when a preceding vehicle changes the lane or is replaced by another vehicle. SOLUTION: When the vehicle 35 for tracking is not detected any more on one's own lane, and another preceding vehicle 36 is detected on his own lane, the vehicle for tracking is replaced by the other preceding vehicle 36 detected on his own lane (Fig. 6e).
