PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a useful aromatic polycarbonate resin at a low cost and a low energy consumption. SOLUTION: In a method for producing an aromatic polycarbonate resin having an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.3-1.0 by subjecting an aromatic dihydroxy compound and a carbonate-bond-forming compound to melt polycondensation, crystallizing the resultant low-mol.-wt. aromatic polycarbonate, and subjecting the crystallization product to solid-phase polymerization in an inert gas atmosphere under heating at a temperature lower than the melting point of the crystallization product to give a polycarbonate resin with a high degree of polymerization, at least a part of the inert gas used for the solid-phase polymerization is caused to flow into the melt polycondensation step for producing the low-mol.-wt. aromatic polycarbonate.
