PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multisubstituted pyridine selectively and in a short scheme. SOLUTION: This pyridine derivative is represented by general formula (Ia) or (Ib) (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each a 1-40C hydrocarbon group or the like; A is a nitrile group, a carboxyl group or the like). This method for producing the pyridine derivative comprises reacting a metallacyclopentane of formula (II) (M is a metal of the group 3 to the group 5 or of lanthanide series of the periodic table; L1 or L2 are each an anionic ligand) with an imine derivative of the following formula (III) (Y is an eliminable group).
