PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformize the tightening degree of a cap 5 at the time of the completion of capping. SOLUTION: A capping device 1 is equipped with a torque measuring means 12 for detecting the output torque generated when a chuck 7 is rotated by a motor 9. At first, the cap 5 is held to the chuck 7 to cover the mouth part of a container 2 with the cap 5 and the chuck 7 is allowed to make a turn in a tightening direction. The value of output torque at this time is detected by the torque measuring means 12 and the output torque increases suddenly at the contact position (meshing start position P) of the cap 5 and the screw part of the container 2. The cap 5 is rotated by a predetermined angle of rotation on the basis of the meshing start position P to thread the cap 5 with the container 2.
