PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new thiophene derivative which is relatively readily synthesized and capable of providing a raw material for polymers, and a new polymer expectable to be used for such as electroconductive materials, etc., by using the thiophene derivative. SOLUTION: This 4,8-dialkoxybenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene compound of a specific structure is represented by the following formula [wherein R1 denotes a <=20C alkyl group]. The polymer has a structural unit derived from the compound.
