A pair of gripping jaws 45<SP>1</SP>, 45A<SP>1</SP> mounted on an arm 15<SP>1</SP> are maintained oriented as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 by a chain 54<SP>1</SP> whilst the arm 15<SP>1</SP> swings through 180 degrees to the position shown chain dotted. The jaws are held open by a spring 711 and may be closed at any point in the cycle by a solenoid 80<SP>1</SP> through a band 81<SP>1</SP>, pulleys 82<SP>1</SP>, 83<SP>1</SP>, a lever 70<SP>1</SP> and a belt 68<SP>1</SP>. The jaws may be held closed by the spring 711 and opened to engage articles by the solenoid 80<SP>1</SP>. The length of the arm 15<SP>1</SP> may be adjusted by slackening screws 90<SP>1</SP>. A spring 91<SP>1</SP> in the chain 541 permits limited extension. A motor 11 drives the arm through reduction gearing and a crank and gear sector. Two arms are shown mounted on opposite ends of a spindle 25 but a plurality may be provided. The arms may be rotated through any angle less than 360 degrees. The machine may be controlled by electrical signals from other machines or may control other machines. Control means are provided to programme the arms to dwell for a fixed time interval at the end of each transfer operation, to stop at the end of each transfer operation, or to run continuously through the end positions and immediately start the return motion. The arms may be stopped at any desired point in the cycle and restarted therefrom. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates an electrical control circuit.
