Cycloalkanes are oxidized to cycloalkanols and cycloalkanone, in the liquid phase in the presence of a pinacol borate anhydride, with an oxidation gas containing molecular oxygen. The pinacol borate anhydrides of formula <FORM:1061877/C2/1> where R1 and R2 which may be the same or different are methyl, tert.-butyl or 1,1,2,2-tetramethylpropyl groups, react with the cycloalkanol formed to give a borate from which the cycloalkanol together with any ketone is liberated by steam distillation. The anhydride may be present in up to 40% by weight of the medium and oxidate gas may be oxygen or an oxygen mixture. Catalysts such as magnesium acetate, cobalt naphthenate, bromides and ozone, and inert diluents such as diphenyl, trichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene and dichlorobenzene may also be present. Examples describe the oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclododecane, and further oxidation of the alkanol and ketone products to dicarboxylic acid is described.
