PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeding device excellent in an aspect of workability as well as capable of both of upper separating paper feeding and lower separating paper feeding of documents by a simple mechanism and con trol. SOLUTION: A handling means 621 to separate documents by making contact with the documents by protruding onto a carrier passage from above between a pair of separation rollers 204A, 204B and a pair of pick-up rollers 203A, 203B is provided, the carriage of a lower level part of a document bundle is prevented by moving a lower handling means 614 is moved onto the carrier passage from below in the case of separating the documents of the top level from the document bundle, and in the meantime, the documents are separated as the handling means 621 first makes contact with the documents by moving an ovelapped feeding preventive means 603 onto the carrier passage from above in the case of separating the document on the bottom level from the document bundle, and thereafter, the carriage of an upper level part of the document bundle is prevented by the overlapped feeding preventive means 603.
