PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a leak detection technique which can detect an abnormal condition of the waterproof section of an endoscope, namely a leak-causing hole or a crack, without the troublesome operation of submerging the endoscope. SOLUTION: The leak detection device is provided with an air pump to pressurize waterproof section, a pressure adjustment means for supplied air, an electromagnetic valve to seal the pressurized waterproof section, a pressure sensor to detect the air pressure on the sealed waterproof section, a notification means to notify the probability of the leak in the waterproof section and a control means to control the actions of the whole device. After air is blown to the waterproof section of an endoscope for a prescribed period of time by the action of the air pump, the electromagnetic valve is closed and the pressure on the waterproof section is measured to be reference pressure. While, in the meantime, the fluctuation of the pressure on the waterproof section is continually detected for a prescribed period of time after the air blowing is finished, the detected pressure is compared with the reference pressure and the probability of the leak in the waterproof section is notified based on the comparison result.
