PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine needle 1 with a tip end 4 on one end part and a restrained part on the other end part, which can reduce the difference between seam qualities generated in various different sewing directions. SOLUTION: This needle has a needle hole 6 extended through the lateral direction on the shank or the needle body 2. The needle hole 6 is placed near the tip end 4 and formed in between two needle hole side walls 14, 15 whose edge parts 19a, 19b are extended along the outline in the exit side from a needle hole end part 7 in the shank side to a needle hole end part 8 in the tip end side in the opposite end side. The outline is extended to below a virtual straight line 21 linking the needle hole end part 8 in the shank side with a swelling part 22 in the tip end side.
