An optical element comprises a glass base having one surface and a resin layer formed on the one surface of the base. The glass base has an optical axis such that the one surface of the base has a contour asymmetrical in rotation about the optical axis. The resin layer extends within the one surface of the glass base and has a contour kept apart from fine chips at the contour of the one surface of the base. Preferably, the distance between the respective contours of the one surface of the glass base and the resin layer is longer than 0.3 mm, and the contour of the resin layer is substantially similar to the contour of the one surface of the base.
