PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hardness adjusting apparatus which can reduce the influence on the external shape of a cushion, separation of the cushion from the shell, and a load when the hardness of the cushion is adjusted. SOLUTION: For applying the apparatus to a cushion 25 made of an expanded material to be disposed at a load supporting position, a cavity 11 is provided in the cushion 25, and a movable plate 12 is disposed in the cavity 11 so as to adjust a backup position so that the cushion 25 is supported by the plate 12 only when the cushion 25 is deformed by a predetermined amount or larger by the pressure acting on the cushion.
