PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alcohol by reducing a carboxylic acid or its ester with hydrogen even under relatively low hydrogen gas pressure. SOLUTION: A carboxylic acid or its ester is reduced with hydrogen in an ether-based solvent or an aromatic hydrocarbon-based solvent in the presence of ruthenium or its compound and a phosphine compound and preferably one or more kinds of cocatalysts selected from a transition metal, a transition metal compound and an amine to provide an alcohol. The method is preferably applied to hydrogen reduction of aliphatic carboxylic acids and their esters each substituted with an aromatic carboxylic acid or a substituent group having an aromatic ring. |
