PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road surface friction coefficient deciding device capable of accurately deciding a coefficient of friction between a road surface and a tire during traveling of a vehicle from only wheel rotational speed information on four wheels, even if vehicle acceleration is not estimated, in a two-wheel drive vehicle. SOLUTION: In the two-wheel drive vehicle, this device is provided with a rotational speed detection means for detecting rotational speed of each wheels of the vehicle, a speed arithmetic means for determining average wheel speed of drive wheels based on the detected rotational speed, a speed arithmetic means for determining average wheel speed of driven wheels, an acceleration/ deceleration arithmetic means for determining wheel acceleration/deceleration from the average wheel speed, an amplitude arithmetic means for determining amplitude of the wheel acceleration/deceleration, an intermediate value arithmetic means for calculating an intermediate value of the amplitude and a road surface friction coeffcient decision means for deciding the coefficient of friction between the road surface and tire based on a relation of the amplitude of the drive wheels and the intermediate value of the driven wheels.
