PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method free from any drawbacks inherent in relevant conventional techniques and capable of easily determining in a short time the ettects of a growth-altering agent on one or more microbial colonies. SOLUTION: This method is characterized by formulating a growth modifier in at least part of a growth medium and comprises the following: (a) an inoculator comprising one or more viable colony-forming monads is inoculated, (b) the colony-forming monad(s) is incubated in such a way as to be replicated into microbial colonies, (c) the characteristics of one or more respective microbial colonies exposed to the growth-altering agent determined, and (d) the characteristics thus determined are assessed to assay the action of the growth- altering agent on each of the microbial colonies.
