PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine anomalies in the quality of water from the behavior of aquatic organisms, without having to use especially advanced softwares of hardwares. SOLUTION: An image of aquatic organisms 2 bred in a water tank 1 is picked up by an imaging device 3. A plurality of area-measuring areas 7a-7c are set in the direction of the height of the image pickup area of the imaging device 3, to compute the area of the aquatic organisms 2 in the image data of each area picked up by the imaging device 3. It is determined as to whether the quality of water is anomalous from the area value, in each area or changes in time in the area value.
