PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for reducing operating time, and to increase efficiency at double-sided reading of an original. SOLUTION: The face side reader 21 reads image data on the one side surface of the original copy at transferring it in the forward direction by second conveying roller pair 19 and so on with related devices and after finishing of its reading, the copy is transferred in the backward direction by the roller pair 19 and so on. Then the is copy re-transferred in the forward direction, and the backside reader 23 reads image data one other side of the copy. In an image read part 2, the transfer rate of the copy at reading of image data is V1 and the transfer rate of the copy at reverse direction is V2, then the relation for both transfer rate becomes, V1<=V2.
