PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lighting device for a discharge lamp, which can start to oscillate within a short time and turn the lamp on without incongiuity when a discharge lamp cannot start or it is in an abnormal condition at the end of it life or when the lamp is removed or in momentary power interruption. SOLUTION: The device has a high frequency generating circuit 2 connected with a direct current source 1 to generate high frequency output, a discharge lamp load circuit 3 turning on the lamp with high frequency output, an abnormality detector circuit 4 detecting abnormality of the lamp, an oscillator control circuit 6 controlling the high frequency oscillator circuit 2, and an oscillation stop circuit 5 interrupting the oscillation in the circuit 2 on the output from the circuit 4. It is also equipped with a non-oscillation detector circuit 7 to detect non-oscillation in the circuit 2 and a reset circuit 10 to reset the circuit 6 and the circuit 5 after the interval previously determined based on the output from the circuit 7.
