PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a video of high quality by enhancing various optical performances in a virtual image viewing optical system which projects the video of a video display element, such as a liquid crystal display panel, on a user's retinas in the eyeball. SOLUTION: The virtual image viewing optical system 3 for projecting the video of the video display element 2 of the user's retinas in the eyeball, and making a virtual image just directly ahead is composed of the first prism 4 having a function which guides the illuminating light in a video screen S9 of the video display element and performs proper correction on the video of the video display element, the second prism 5 which has the surface where the reflective coating was applied, and the total reflection surface, and a ocular lens 6. The first prism and the first second prism use at least one plane as a freely curved surface, respectively, the first prism has a surface where the half-mirror coating was performed, or reflecting members, such as a holographic mirror.
