This invention is a medical ventilator (20), its corresponding method of operation wherein ventilator work of breathing is nullified during ventilation support of a patient, the ventilator having a gas source (32), a pressure sensor (56), a microprocessor (60), at least one actuator (26) of a pneumatic system (22), and driver circuits (62). The ventilator (20) is in fluid communication with the gas source (32), and an endotracheal tube (50) which facilitates fluid communication with the patient's lungs. The actuator (26) is disposed between the source of gas (32), and the endotracheal tube (50). The driver circuit (62) adjusts the actuator (26) to change the pressure, and flow of the gas. The pressure sensor (56) measures the pressure of the gas proximate the distal end of the endotracheal tube (50), and generates output based upon the sensed pressure. The microprocessor (60) controls the pressure, and flow of the gas exiting the pneumatic system by comparing the sensed pressure with a predetermined baseline pressure. It is electrically coupled to the output of the pressure sensor (56), sends a command signal to the drive circuits, and actuator based upon this comparison. |
