The coupling, comprising two connectors (2, 3) for the ends of optical fibres (16, 25), has one of the connectors (3) holding a reserve (36) of a fluid with a refractive index the same as that of the fibres, and a pump (37). The pump is linked to the fluid reserve and actuated by coupling and uncoupling movements of the two connectors to inject the fluid into the gap (58) between the ends of the two fibres as they come together or move apart.
