A wear liner, for use in an application where it is subject to abrasion and impacts, is constructed as a composite of a low carbon steel sheet of suitable thickness to give a high toughness characteristic to the wear liner, and of a high chrome white iron to give a very hard characteristic to the liner so that it may withstand abrasion and impac t. In order for the composite materials to become sufficiently integrated, the steel sheet is perforated and placed into a mold where molten white iron is poured, thus producing a diffusion weld at the interface of the plate and white iron, the white iron flowing into the perforations to further interlock the steel sheet with the white iron.
