In a method in the unwinding of a machine reel, a paper web (W) is discharged from a paper roll to the finishing treatment of paper. The paper web (W) discharged from the paper roll is, in the case of a disturbance, e.g. a web break, bound by means of an elongated element (4) tightened against the surface layer of the paper roll. The present invention also relates to an apparatus for implementing the method.
