PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manuscript reader capable of flexibly coping with various objects to be read. SOLUTION: An ND filter 2 and its clamp part 3 are installed in front of a CCD 1, having element series on the optical path and either state of insertion or non-insertion of the filter enable modify by vertical moving of the filter 2 with a clamp part 3. In addition to the optical system of this structure, the drive source for image reading by scanning a manuscript, an amplifier for amplifying to the required level of image outputting from the CCD 1 and the detector for detecting the saturation state of the input part of its A/D converter from the output of the A/D converter are provided. A filter, having uniform spectral transmittance, is either inserted or is not inserted on the optical path of the optical system, depending on this detector. This structure enables flexibly coping with manuscripts having different reflectance properties and sharper reading of images from various manuscripts.
