PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a wide-band saturable Bragg reflector suitable for using on the occasion of mode-locking a laser, to provide a pulse not longer than 10 femtoseconds, or pulse tunable over a wide wavelength band and comparatively long. SOLUTION: A saturable Bragg reflector 10 has monolithic integrated multilayer stack having three sections favorably. The first section 12 functions as an appropriate board for indicating the other sections. The second section 14 has a plurality of semiconductor layers composed by arranging materials having relatively high refractive indexes such as AlxGa1-xAs, and materials having relatively low refractive indexes such as AlAs alternately. These layers are grown epitaxially on a board, and their thicknesses and values of X change along the board. Generally, these layers increase in thickness and their x values decrease with their distance from the uppermost part of the stack.
