PURPOSE: A method and system for offering on-demand multimedia contents is provided so as to easily update new contents and to offer different categories of advertisement according to a running time of the contents and personal information such as an age or job of a viewer by adopting the method of inserting an advertisement during broadcasting the multimedia contents. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises the first memory(102), the second memory(104), and a server(100). The first memory(102), formatted in a digital data stream type, stores the multimedia contents with cutting pointers located at designated positions. The second memory(104), also formatted in a digital data stream type, stores advertisement contents to be activated by the cutting pointers of the multimedia contents. The server(100) retrieves a specific multimedia contents from the first memory(102), offers the retrieved multimedia contents to a viewer over the internet, senses the cutting pointers included in the multimedia contents, then retrieves the advertisement contents in the second memory, and offers the advertisement contents to the viewer. The server(100) includes a contents retrieval unit, a cutting pointer sensing unit, and a contents transmission unit.
