PURPOSE: To satisfactorily discriminate backlight and to satisfactorily perform backlight correction. CONSTITUTION: The positional decision of a dark distribution and the histogram ratio calculation of the dark distribution are performed in a step 1. Bright distribution decision and high luminance slice setting are performed in the following step 2. Thereafter, backlight decision is performed in a step 3. In this case, it is decided by a backlight deciding means that the light is not in a backlight state when a value (dark-ratio) explained at the section of the positional decision of the dark distribution and the calculation of the histogram ratio of the dark distribution < 0 dB to -6 dB, and it is decided that the light is in the backlight state when the value is within the range of -6 dB, to -30 dB. When the light is not in the backlight state, the high luminance slice set value is left as it is in a step 4. Contrarily, when the light is in the backlight state, the value (dark-ratio) is normalized in a step 5; for example, a backlight correction is performed so as to reduce the high luminance component limiter value of the integral signal of the output where a peak value is detected.
