Seismic prospecting comprises the use of a vibratory source by activating the vibratory source using a reference pilot signal. An instantaneous phase of the reference pilot signal is represented as a function of the initial and ending frequencies and times. The outgoing or near-field signal is measured from the vibratory source, and basis signals are defined. Seismic prospecting using a vibratory source comprises activating the vibratory source using a reference pilot signal having an initial frequency at a starting time and an ending frequency at an ending time. An instantaneous phase of the reference pilot signal is represented as a function of the initial and ending frequencies and times. The outgoing or near-field signal is measured from the vibratory source. Basis signals are defined, in which each signal is a sinusoid having a linear frequency and differential phase. The linear frequencies are instantaneous frequencies of the reference pilot signal. The measured outgoing or near-field signal is represented as a sum of the basis signals weighted by an associated weighting function.
