PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the length of a contact member of a movable current contact. SOLUTION: A buffer gas circuit breaker comprises a cylindrical fixed side current contact 13 having a comb-like contact member 13b formed with a plurality of slits 13a open at their ends and a movable current contact 20 opposed to each other via a pole insulation supporting member 10, the contacts 13, 20 being approachable or separatable with each other. An insulating gas compressed by a buffer cylinder 19 is blown to an arc generated between a fixed side arc contact 14 and a movable side arc contact 15 during circuit breaking to extinguish the arc. The insulating gas after extinguishing the arc is passed through the fixed side current contact 13. The width of a part of the contact member 13b is reduced.
