PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a practically effective linear image sensor which can shorten an information reading time with a low resolution, and can prevent a cost increase by reducing the number of gate pulse wiring lines. SOLUTION: The linear image sensor includes a light receiver 1 having a multiplicity of pixels arranged in one direction, a high-resolution mode means having a first charge reading part 2A provided on one side of the light receiver 1 and a first signal charge transferring part 3A of a CCD shift register, and a low-resolution mode means having a second signal charge reading part 2B provided on the other side of the light receiver 1 and a second signal charge transferring part 3B of the CCD shift register.
