PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic vending machine and a method for controlling it capable of selling various kinds of merchandise. SOLUTION: A chain 34 is driven by a drive 46 and when a detection signal is inputted from a sensor 61, driving is stopped to return the chain 34 to a reference position. After then, the chain 34 is additionally driven to judge the positional information of each hook 38 (the address of a hook 38 to which column numbers m, m+1, m+2,..., m+n are set) based on a detection signal from a sensor 58 and to detect the presence/absence of the merchandise G at each pertinent hook 38 based on a detection signal from a sensor 50. Consequently, sold out merchandise or unsold merchandise can be grasped easily and the merchandise can be managed properly.
