PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a image reader enabling reading fine image data of a copy by enhancing the reading accuracy for the reference materials of concentration setting under the face of the end of the glass part for continuous reading of the manuscript and performing gain correction of image signal with accuracy. SOLUTION: In the image reader, having a first image read means for reading image data from the copy placed on the glass part and the second image read means for sequentially reading image data from the copy proceeding on the glass part for continuous reading of the manuscript, the density reference materials is arranged on under face in the end part of out side of the effective range, to read an original in the main scanning direction of the glass part for continuous reading of the copy and in the reading by a second image read means, the density reference materials is read by the image read part and the image data of the copy is read with correcting of time variation of the quantity of light in the main scanning direction of the manuscript lighting using the output signal to obtain from the image reading part.
