PURPOSE: An apparatus and method of controlling track search in an optical disk apparatus is provided to enable a stable tracking servo operation by positioning the optical axis of an optical pickup at the center of a movable operation range at a time point of completing a track search operation. CONSTITUTION: A TZC counter(501) counts the number of track crossing by the optical axis of an optical pickup from a Track Zero Crossing(TZC) detected from a tracking signal. A TZC pulse width detecting block(504) detects the pulse width of the TZC. A controller(502) outputs a driving signal for varying a track search rate based upon the pulse width, the number of track crossing and reference rate data per requested target track number. A reference time generating block(506) outputs a track search reference time corresponding to the requested target track number. A driving voltage generating block(503) generates a driving voltage and applies the voltage to a sled motor or an optical pickup actuator. A memory(505) stores reference rate data in a data table.
