Determining an air-fuel mixture to be injected into an IC engine comprises determining a concentration of oxygen in an exhaust gas of the engine using an oxygen-sensitive measuring instrument; determining a concentration of a further exhaust gas component using a measuring device which is sensitive for this exhaust gas component; and calculating a lambda value depending on the concentration of the further exhaust gas component and the oxygen concentration. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determining an air-fuel mixture to be injected into an IC engine. Preferred Features: The concentration of a carbon-containing exhaust gas component is determined. The concentration of CO, CO2 and/or hydrocarbons is determined in the exhaust gas. The lambda value is calculated depending on the concentration of at least the further gas component and oxygen according to a mathematical model.
