The screw has a central shaft with a spiral vane (2). The arm (5) at the end of the shaft extends at right-angles to the shaft and has a notch (6) at its outer end 1 cm deep. The arm is made of hardened steel, at least 8 mm thick and 3 cm wide. The trough (1) in which the Archimedean screw operates is of square or rectangular-section, and there are sideways bulges (4) in the sides opposite the arm, extending out to a width of 3 cm. There is a drop shaft (3) under this region.
