PURPOSE: A coding gene of glutamyl transpeptidase and its nucleotide sequence are provided for the mass-production of high quality gamma-polyglutamic acid. CONSTITUTION: The coding gene of glutamyl transpeptidase, which is represented by SEQ ID NO: 1 and produces gamma-glutamic acid, is isolated from Bacillus subtilis MJM (KFCC 11016) by the steps of: sampling Bacillus species from the soil and fermented soybean culture; selecting a Bacillus strain having higher biosynthesizability; measuring the activity of glutamyl transpeptidase produced from the selected Bacillus subtilis MJM (KFCC 11016); amplifying the coding gene of glutamyl transpeptidase by PCR; and isolating the gene and determining its nucleotide sequence.
