Working up domestic waste and recovering valuable materials comprises spreading and isolating the waste components on a sorting surface (17) and reading off individual components. The sorting surface is connected to an evacuated and heated treatment chamber (8) in which the waste is heated to at least 80 deg C, dried and sterilized. An Independent claim is also included for a device for working up domestic waste and recovering valuable materials. Preferred Features: Evaporated water is collected in a condenser (13). The waste is heated to at least 134 deg C but not more than 160 deg C in a non-reactive atmosphere. The pressure in the chamber is reduced to less than 400, preferably less than 100 mbar.
