Composite membrane comprises a support layer (2) made from a first material and a permeation layer (1) made from a second material arranged on the support layer. The second material is selectively permeable for a predetermined substance. The support layer has a mechanical support structure with through-holes (4) through which the predetermined substance can move orthogonally and optionally also laterally to the plane of the permeation layer through the support layer. The support layer exposes surfaces of the permeation layer which are connected to the through-holes. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a diffusion membrane system comprising at least two of the above composite membranes connected to each other in a stack; and (b) a process for producing the composite membrane comprising applying a permeation layer to a support layer; and molding a support structure in the support layer.
