A lockable nut system for use with threaded steel bar (51) which includes a screw threaded nut (50) for engagement with the threaded steel bar (51) and a locking member (56) which is slidably engageable with the bar (51). The locking member (56) is adaptable to resist rotation about the bar (51) and is also axially engageable with the nut (50) to prevent rotation of the nut (50). The locking member (56) may have a finger (58) to engage the nut (50) with an end of the finger (58) being displaced to engage the nut (50) as a result of deformation of a finger actuating tab. The locking member (56) may engage the bar (51) by displacement of an end of at least one tongue as a result of deformation of a tongue actuating tab during compression between the nut (50) and a second structure.
