The superfinishing process of the cylindrical surface of a part (1) consists in placing an abrasive application wheel (4) so that its axis (5) is perpendicular to the part's axis (6). The wheel's lateral surface (7) is then supported against the cylindrical surface and the wheel is rotated and translated (10) along the part's axis simultaneously with the part's rotation (11) at speeds such that the entire cylindrical surface is machined longitudinally (3) by the abrasive along a helical path whose successive coils (12) overlap.
