A process for treating a protein-containing liquid so as to reduce its protein content involves applying the liquid to a composting mass and maintaining microbiological conditions therein. Preferably the liquid is the pot ale/pot ale cream residue of whisky production and the composting mass is a softwood or hardwood, eg pine oak, birch or elm. The composting mass 12 is preferably arranged in rows 10 on sloping land and is held in position by nets 16. Pot ale (cream) is then applied to the composting mass and undergoes aerobic digestion. The resultant liquid having a reduced protein content and BOD is collected on an impervious layer 14 and can then be distributed over wetlands or disposed of as sewage.
|
