An interconnection system is shown that enables an optical circuit board Ä300Ü having a number of optical devices Ä400, 500Ü to be easily connected to and disconnected from a backplane Ä100Ü. The optical devices are positioned along a side edge Ä311Ü of a substrate Ä310Ü and are adapted to interconnect with a like number of optical connectors Ä200Ü that are arrayed on the backplane in a row or column. Each optical plug is held in a holder Ä120Ü, which is retained in backplane Ä100Ü by a clip Ä110Ü. Each of the optical connectors is a plug that includes a ferrule Ä24Ü, which encloses an optical fiber and projects from one end of the plug. Each of the edge-mounted optical devices includes a jack receptacle Ä410, 510Ü at its front end and has a cavity Ä401, 501Ü that is shaped to receive the optical plug. All of the jack receptacles are similarly shaped. Each cavity further includes a boss Ä421, 521Ü for receiving the ferrule. The plugs and jack receptacles are arranged to engage, but not interlock with, each other. The optical devices include two or more downward-extending pins Ä430, 530Ü that are received in corresponding holes Ä334, 335Ü in the substrate board for accurate positioning. Illustratively, optical device Ä400Ü includes a jack receptacle in its front-end portion Ä410Ü and its back-end portion Ä420Ü; whereas optical device Ä500Ü includes a jack receptacle in its front-end portion Ä510Ü and one or more transducers Ä550Ü, for converting between electrical and optical signals, in its back-end portion Ä520Ü. <IMAGE> |
