A door or hatch 10 is operated by a hydraulic cylinder 12 connected to a safety valve 28, which, if an obstacle is pressed against a sensitive strip 16 when the door is being closed, diverts working liquid, which after leaving the cylinder 12 via conduit 38 would usually pass through conduits 40 and 66 to a reservoir 68, so that it passes instead through conduit 36 to a chamber 48' thereby raising an operating valve from the closing position (in which piston 44 is aligned with the conduits 40, 62, 64, 66) to the opening position (in which piston 46 is so aligned). The door or hatch 10 is thus stopped and may be arranged to reverse a little as working liquid is now delivered by a pump P through conduits 62 and 40 to push the safety valve into the position shown and may then push the piston 12' to the right. The liquid in chamber 48' may drain via a throttle valve 74 to the reservoir 68 while the operating lever 56 returns to a neutral position (as shown) under the bias of springs 58, 60.
