Prior to preparation of dimethylaminoacetonitrile from a formaldehyde source, dimethylamine and hydrogen cyanide, a small amount of benzoguanamine is added to improve the color-stability of the product. Preparation of a color-stable aqueous dimethylaminoacetonitrile solution from a formaldehyde source, dimethylamine and hydrogen cyanide is claimed. Prior to the reaction, 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine (benzoguanamine) is added to the mixture at a concentration of 0.001-5 wt.% based on formaldehyde. The reactants are present in stoichiometric amounts or in a ratio of 0.98-1.02 moles formaldehyde and 0.95-1.10 moles dimethylamine per mole of HCN. |
