A surgical dressing comprises cellulosic sponge material impregnated with an anti-coagulant selected from heparin, alkali metal citrates, alkali metal oxalates, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, and includes an adhesive backing strip. The sponge material is impregnated during or after manufacture and may be applied to the body in wet or dry condition. When secured over a wound, the adhesive backing strip causes it to be pressed against the wound to arrest bleeding as the sponge is distended by absorbed fluid. Germicides such as sodium ethyl mercurithiosalicylate and benzalkonium chloride may be included.
