PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gene coding for a reductase which acts on 2- oxocarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The gene coding for the reductase derived from in Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc oenos, a protein encoded by the gene and their homologues are provided. The reductase can act on 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyric acid to produce R-2- hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid. R-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid is useful for medicine and the like as a raw material.
